Er zijn natuurlijk ook orthodoxen, maar die zijn toch niet representatief voor het Jodendom. Dus komt de vraag op: waarom zijn de meeste Joden liberaal?
Daar zijn in de loop der tijd verschillende antwoorden op gegeven. De historicus Jonathan Israel heeft beweerd dat groepen die zelf zijn vervolgd de neiging hebben zich toleranter en liberaler op te stellen jegens anderen. Je moet dus aan den lijve ondervonden hebben hoe het voelt met dictatoriale types te dealen. Een andere verklaring is dat het Jodendom ook een zeer areligieuze kant heeft. Je kunt Jood zijn en toch atheïst. Een rabbijn vraagt niet aan jou of God bestaat een rabbijn vraagt aan jou of je joods bent. Ook die houding zou tot liberaal gedrag neigen.
Goldman zelf heeft weer een andere verklaring, die er uit bestaat dat Joden in het verleden min of meer gedwongen werden tot intellectuele beroepen. Daar zouden spoedig in uitblinken. Om niet al te zeer op te vallen, schikten zij graag in een ondergeschikte positie, in die zin dat zij anderen in hun succes lieten delen – een uitgangspunt van het ware liberalisme.
“It is a high-class problem, but the Jews must deal with the fact that they are the most successful people in the history of mankind by any measure: longevity, contributions to arts and sciences, Nobel Prizes, business and philanthropy (Olympic medals being the great exception). The exception that proves the rule is China, among whose 1.5 billion people there is not a single Jew-hater. China is confident of its own longevity, and the principle that has held China together since the founding of its imperial system is a merciless meritocracy which rewards success and disdains failure”.
