In mijn jeugd had je Sammy Davis jr. Die was zwart en Joods. “Hoe kan dat nou?”, vroegen wij ons af, “Heeft hij misschien een Joodse moeder?”
Maar zou die dan ook zwart zijn? Enzovoort. Later kwam de oplossing, ik citeer Wikipedia: “Een tegenslag kwam in 1954, toen Davis door een auto-ongeluk een oog kwijtraakte. Toen hij in het ziekenhuis lag, verdiepte hij zich in het jodendom en in datzelfde jaar werd hij Joods.”
Dat is ongebruikelijk, maar het kan. Het kan zelfs nog ongebruikelijker, want hier is ze dan!
Ik presenteer Sandra Lawson, de eerste vrouwelijke, Afro-Amerikaanse, lesbische rabbijn. Ze werkte bij de politie, was niet gelovig, maar wist elf jaar geleden ineens dat ze Joods zou worden. Daarna bezocht ze Israël, volgde een opleiding die tot een Joodse “bekering” leidde, verdiepte zich steeds meer in het Jodendom en kwam tenslotte op de rabbijnsopleiding terecht, die zij nu dus met succes heeft voltooid.
The Washington Post heeft een stuk over haar Werdegang:
“But this spring Lawson finished her fourth year at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College outside Philadelphia with the help of an online GoFundMe campaign. She plans to marry her girlfriend and spend the fall semester in Israel. If all goes according to plan, she will celebrate her ordination in 2018.”

“But, race is just one of the many factors that that will make Sandra a powerful rabbi,” Tobin continued. “From her military training to her background in sociology to her sense of humor, she brings a perspective that will be valuable to any community she serves. Her sexual orientation, Lawson said, has not thrown up obstacles in her path toward Judaism or the clergy. But race comes up in her Jewish circles in a way that being gay doesn’t. There are no solid figures on the number of black Jews in the U.S., but it is by all accounts relatively small.”
